In addition to his plays, Cancelmi has written numerous short stories,
a short novel, "Sun in an Empty Room," and is currently working
on a screenplay with Australian writer Nick Barkla. A great admirer
of French literature, Cancelmi has translated works by such
authors as Koltes, Jean-Luc Lagarce, Robert Desnos, Andre Gide,
Michel Trembley, E. M. Cioran, Leon Bloy and Georges Bataille.
He has studied writing with such noted authors as Suzan-Lori Parks
and John Crowley, and is currently working on a translation of
"Le Bavard," by Louis-Rene Des Forets. As a dramaturg, Cancelmi has
worked for various theater companies, most recently Immediate
Medium, Inc., of which he was a founding member, and the Cutting
Ball Theater Company in San Francisco [Rob Melrose, Artistic
Director]. Rounding out his theatrical experience, Cancelmi is also
an experienced actor, having trained at Acting International in
Paris, France, and at the School at Steppenwolf in Chicago. Cancelmi
works and resides in Brooklyn, New York.
